
The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health) is a technical scientific organ of the Italian National Health Service. It enjoys scientific, organisational, administrative and accounting independence and is subject to monitoring by the Ministry of Health. It undertakes research, experimental, control and training functions in relation to public health in Italy.
The Institute
Collaborates with the Minister of Health in preparing and implementing scientific and health planning.
Promotes programmes of national interest consistent with the objectives of the National Health Plan, with tasks of technical guidance and co-ordination, in the field of health protection and promotion, in collaboration with the Regions and with local hospital authorities and health boards, as well as with public and private sector organisations of national importance.
Provides advice to the national government and the Regions on their respective health plans.
Promotes programmes of research on the relationship between environment and health.
Promotes programmes and clinical trials of national interest, performed at scientific hospital and care facilities and local health board hospitals.
Provides advice on protection of public health in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Health and Safety at Work and with other bodies concerned with the production and use of thermo-electric and nuclear energy, radioactive substances and every form of energy used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Takes part, through its own operations centres and by contributing financially, in foreign and international projects aimed at protection of public health, as well as in study and research programmes of national organisations.

Certifies and accredits test laboratories and certification bodies provided for by EU regulations and international treaties in the public health field.
Signs collaboration agreements with administrations, government agencies, associations and other public or private sector Italian, foreign or international legal persons, from which it may receive contributions, to carry out specific research related to its institutional tasks.
Undertakes initiatives in training and updating on public health and health care organisation addressed to personnel of the national health service and other organisations concerned with protection and promotion of health.
Promotes scientific conferences and debates of a national and international character on topics related to its institutional tasks, and takes part through its own experts in national and international conferences and debates regarding the same tasks.
Makes known, through scientific publications, the results of the research carried out, the methods of analysis developed and, in general, the scientific documentation prepared or collected in the interests of public health.
The University Polyclinic Umberto I
The Polyclinic began at the beginning of the 1900's to respond to the needs of the progression of medicine which was in rapid evolution, and to unite in a single large complex,the clinics and hospitals found in various parts of the city.
Today this has become a University Agency able to delegate assistance with elevated quality in measures which are always growing and more relevent.
The Polyclinic of Umberto I administers treatment to over 60,00 in patients, 20,00 Day Hospital patients, over 200,000 emergency room visits, and 1,000,000 office visits annually.
Accompanying this there is also the daily activity of research and didactics by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgeons of the Universtiy of "La Sapienza" in Rome.
With this combination of professional medical treatment, biomedical research, and didactics, the Polyclinic of Umberto I results therfore as a "Special Hospital" capable of producing extraordinary results for not only those who are involved but for the community as well which reflects a positive objective for Regional Medical Services and in general for the entire nation.
