Luiss Guido Carli
History
Luiss Guido Carli has its origins in the structural and institutional transformation of a pre-existing Roman institution, Università Pro Deo, which was carried out between 1974 and 1978 by a group of private and State-backed businessmen.
The Pro Deo University was established by Presidential Decree no. 436 of 1966. It was sponsored by a non-profit organisation (Auiss) specially set up for that purpose by a group of private individuals. The University as it then existed consisted of two faculties: Economics and Commerce, and Political Science.
In the Spring of 1974 some important companies (including FIAT, IBP, Saras, Liquigas and the Italian subsidiary of St. Gobain) on the initiative of Umberto Agnelli committed themselves to supporting the University in financial terms and to promoting the updating of the programmes.
In 1977 the University changed its name to Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali - Luiss.
In 1978 the number of companies supporting Luiss financially grew to include Confindustria, some of the largest Italian industrial groups and important financial institutions with the aim of assuring a solid financial base for the University and allowing it to continue in its development of new programmes. The group of new financial backers brought an excellent array of entrepreneurs and managers to the Board of Directors of Luiss. Guido Carli was appointed as President of the University while the historian Rosario Romeo was appointed Rector.
The transformation which the new supporters had in mind not only related to the institutional structure of the University but also and above all to the so called "Education Plan" (Progetto di formazione), aimed at creating an independent structure really capable of bridging the gap between university and the workplace. The key points are:
- the decision to limit student numbers and to adopt rigorous admission criteria, requiring also compulsory attendance from the students;
- the concrete and functional nature of the courses of study in tune with the needs of an industrial society;
- excellent course organisation and the optimisation of services with respect to objectives;
- an Anglo-Saxon approach aimed at rewarding effort and merit.
In 1981 also the Luiss sponsoring body, Auiss, changed its membership base, co-opting new members and appointing as its president, Vittorio Merloni, at that time also president of Confindustria.
1982 witnessed the birth of the Faculty of Law.
Also in 1982 the supporters of Luiss formed the Associazione Amici della Luiss (Friends of Luiss) whose aim is to engage in activities in support of the University, providing in particular for the awarding of scholarships and research grants.
In 1984 the economist Carlo Scognamiglio was appointed Rector.
In 1988 Sergio Pininfarina was appointed president of Auiss, which is the guarantor of the University's institutional ends vis-à-vis the State. During his presidency the sponsoring body, which in the meantime had changed its name to Aluiss (Association for Luiss) in 1989, endowed the University with new facilities in Via Parenzo, which currently house the Faculty of Law.
In 1992 Luigi Abete became president of Aluiss.
In the same year Mario Arcelli, full professor of Monetary Economics at the Faculty of Economics, succeeded Carlo Scognamiglio as Rector.
On 23 April 1993 Guido Carli died. The Board of Directors appointed Luigi Abete as President of the University, an appointment that represents the wish to continue even more than before along the road to modernisation and excellence.
On 18 April 1994, in memory and in honour of the life and work of Guido Carli, the Board of Directors resolved to name the University after him.
In January 1998 Luiss Guido Carli acquired the Villa Blanc property, earmarked to house one of the two faculties currently located in Viale Pola. The investment will allow the artistic and naturalistic value of the complex to be recovered for a use which is consistent with the collective interest and the enhancement of the property itself. |
